'Washington Black' is the show that could, just like its main character

“Washington Black” seemed destined for a screen adaptation. The 2018 novel by Canadian writer Esi Edugyan caught actor Sterling K. Brown’s eye and he put the wheels in motion to get it made. As things started falling into place in a “lovely way,” production found two young actors to play titular role at different ages. The eight-episode series on Hulu premieres Wednesday and follows the adventures of a Black boy in the 1830s who overcomes the terrible circumstances of his birth on a plantation in the Caribbean to find his freedom through the courage to keep dreaming big and have an open heart. US says it's leaving UNESCO again, only 2 years after rejoining

The Trump administration has announced that it will once again withdraw from the U.N. cultural agency UNESCO. The move Tuesday was expect and has the U.S. further retreating from international organizations. The decision to pull U.S. funding and participation from UNESCO comes two years after the Biden administration rejoined following a controversial, five-year absence that began during President Donald Trump’s first term. The White House cited similar concerns as it did in 2018, saying it believes U.S. involvement is not in its national interest and accusing the agency promoting anti-Israel speech.
